The word "woman" in Chinese language

The original character for woman depicted her in a servile, bowing position. This then changed to a kneeling position and later to the modern character, which resembles a woman taking long, bold strides

The character for 'woman', is pronounced "nu" and it appears in several characters with mainly positive meanings, such as, "an" (peace, showing the woman under a roof) or "hao" (good, combining the symbols for a woman and a child.

There are also terms which imply negative characteristics in women through their use of the sign - such as "adultery" written here (pronounced "jian4"), and forming another character made of three women characters combined alltogether.

A woman taking care of a child is something good. It symbolizes family happiness.

Another friend gives me another possible interpretation as a chinese concept : children (a boy and a girl) together represent ideal happiness for a family next's generation.

"Peace, calm", pronounced "an". A woman under the roof of a house is something that will bring the man peace. It was the woman who cared for the household.

The word "covet" or "desire" pictures a woman making a decision between two trees. There were two significant trees side by side in the garden from which to choose.

No need to know Chinese to appreciate this language's fine Calligraphy for the word "woman."

This interpretation of that character was created by painter Li Qian.

in Japanese language :

Like hiragana , katakana is a syllabic alphabet derived from Chinese characters. Hiragana , however, was produced by drawing Chinese characters in quick, cursive and fluid strokes. Katakana , however, takes Chinese characters and draws only one part of the character, a kind of shorthand. In the example below, both the hiragana and the katakana characters are derived from the same Chinese character which stands for "woman" (pronounced "onna" in japanese).
